Distances in Space
Light Years
Vocabulary
- Light Years
Students must know:
· Light years measure distance
· Scientists use light years are used to measure distances and sizes in the universe because it is so vast
· Light travels faster than anything else we can measure: 299,792,458 m/s

Electromagnetic Spectrum
Vocabulary
- Electromagnetic (EM) spectrum
- radio waves
- microwaves
- infrared waves
- visible light
- untraviolet waves
- x-ray, gamma ray; red shift, blue shift
Students must know:
· Radiation is energy that travels and spreads through space
· The EM spectrum is the range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation
· The EM spectrum is made up of waves we can see (visible light) and many we cannot see and all travel at the speed of light
· Wavelength and frequency are inversely proportional
· The smaller the wavelength, the higher the frequency (gamma waves are the size of atomic nuclei); thus highest amount of energy and very dangerous to living things.
· Scientists study wavelengths on the EM spectrum that are emitted by stars and other celestial bodies and analyze those bodies’ movement and properties
